In today's fast-paced world, stress and fatigue are all too common. While that daily caffeine fix might offer a temporary escape, a more sustainable solution might surprise you: travel! Contrary to being just a leisure activity, travel can be your ticket to a healthier and happier you.

According to a 2022 report by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), physical inactivity is a major contributing factor to rising NCDs (Non-communicable Diseases) in India. "The human body is meant to be in motion," says Dr. Anjali Banerjee, a Bangalore-based physiotherapist. "Travel inherently involves movement – walking new streets, exploring historical sites, or even hiking breathtaking trails. This physical activity combats the negative effects of a sedentary lifestyle, improving cardiovascular health, reducing muscle tension, and boosting energy levels."

A recent study by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) revealed that over 80% of Indian office workers experience stress, with a significant portion leading to health complications.

Our bodies were designed for movement, not chained to office chairs. Millions of years of evolution have ingrained in us the need for exploration and physical activity. However, the modern lifestyle, characterized by long commutes and desk jobs, often leaves us feeling stagnant. Whether it's navigating bustling city streets, hiking through breathtaking landscapes, or simply swimming in the ocean, travel gets you moving, boosting your heart health, strengthening muscles, and improving overall fitness.

Spending time in nature reduces stress, improves mood, and enhances focus," says Dr. Anjali Bhaduri, a Bangalore-based psychologist, in a recent interview with The Hindu. Studies have shown that exposure to nature can lower cortisol levels (the stress hormone), promote feelings of calm, and even enhance cognitive function. Imagine swapping your daily commute for a walk on the beach, or replacing your lunch break with a stroll through a park. Travel allows you to immerse yourself in nature's restorative power, leading to significant mental health benefits.

In today's hyper-connected world, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the constant barrage of emails, social media notifications, and breaking news. A 2022 survey by the Delhi School of Economics found that 68% of Indian adults reported feeling overwhelmed by information overload.

Travel offers a much-needed escape from this digital deluge. The rise of "digital nomads" - professionals who work remotely while traveling - is a testament to the growing desire to disconnect and reconnect with ourselves. By stepping away from screens and embracing new experiences, travel allows you to de-stress, improve sleep quality, and boost your overall well-being.

Hurry up,

pack your bags!

Travel - Your ticket to wellbeing

Watch Mr. Sibi Gnaneshwaran share his experiences as a digital nomad why he thinks travelling can keep you in top shape.

Travel isn't just about ticking destinations off a bucket list. It's about encountering new cultures, perspectives, and ways of life. This exposure broadens your horizons, fosters empathy, and challenges our own preconceived notions.

As Dr. Pavithra Raj, Professor of Industrial Psychology based in Bangalore puts it, "Travel can be a transformative experience, pushing you outside your comfort zone and fostering personal growth. The solo trips that I did in my time have definitely shaped me as a person."

Travel doesn't have to be an extravagant affair. A weekend getaway to a nearby hill station or a cultural exploration within your own city can be just as transformative.

A recent trip that I took to Coorg with my family really helped me rejuvenate myself and acted like a "reset button" of sorts, putting things in perspective again. While the mornings were spent sight-seeing and enjoying everything that the queen of hills had to offer, I also got some work done during the night. Being surrounded by the lush greenery, in nature's lap really did make a big difference in both my physical and mental well-being.

So, the next time you're feeling overwhelmed by stress or simply stuck in a rut, consider packing your bags. Travel may be the key to unlocking a healthier, happier you. From increased physical activity to improved mental well-being and a deeper connection with nature, travel offers a multitude of benefits that can positively impact your life.

Remember, investing in travel is an investment in yourself.
